Kete Tiaki: preventing elder abuse, enhancing mana

Speaking about elder abuse is never easy, but silence makes it harder to protect those at risk. Kete Tiaki, a new toolkit from Te Ahi Kaa Indigenous Solutions, provides guidance on how to tackle challenging discussions and keep people safe.

The toolkit is designed to support anyone who works older people, with a particular focus on understanding cultural differences and upholding mana, dignity and wellbeing.

“A key feature is the AEIOU framework, which offers clear steps to build trust, open up kōrero, identify protective factors, explore options, and connect people to support,”  Danielle Oakes, Pou Ārahi, Te Ahi Kaa says.

“We want to acknowledge the barriers people face in speaking up, and the important role whānau, communities, organisations, and systems play in creating safe and supportive environments.”

Kete Tiaki was developed by Te Ahi Kaa Indigenous Solutions, with funding from the Office for Seniors and input from local kaumātua of Te Pūaha o Waikato, Hei Tiaki, Social Wealth, and Miraka Davis.
