Budget 2026: SuperGold Card upgrade to provide new ID option for older New Zealanders

The Government has announced that Budget 2026 will include funding to introduce the option to use the SuperGold Card as a form of official identification.

The Government is investing $36.4 million in operating funding and $6.46 million in capital funding to support the design and delivery of the upgraded card and associated systems.

The upgraded card will include a photograph and enhanced security features. It will be designed to meet the requirements used by banks and other service providers. The upgrade will be free and optional - people who choose not to upgrade will be able to continue using their existing SuperGold Card as they do now.

This initiative is part of the Better Later Life Action Plan 2025–2028, which focuses on supporting older New Zealanders to stay independent, connected, and able to live well for longer. Work will begin following Budget 2026. The upgraded SuperGold Card is expected to be available from October 2028.

Information about the upgrade, including how to apply, will be available closer to launch.
